Everyone knows who Sir Ernest Shackleton and Amelia Earhart were, but there are many adventurers whose accomplishments rival those of the most celebrated explorers, yet most people have never heard of them. This historical survey course, sponsored by Dominican University’s OLLI continued education program, will meet at the Villa Marin every Monday in April (4/6-4/27). Each 90 minute class will recount the true but little known stories of extraordinary men and women who once made world headlines but have virtually disappeared from the historical record. Driven by a combination of fortune, glory, wanderlust, and an insane desire to achieve the impossible, they accomplished something extraordinary, the lessons of which remain relevant today. As if this weren’t enough, they also experienced brushes with death, disease, disaster, and treachery yet still managed to succeed. The four-week course is based on research for my next book, “Intrepid! Nine of the World’s Greatest Adventurers Forgotten By History” to be published by The History Press in September, and will be lavishly illustrated with photos, film clips and first person accounts.
