Early the morning of August 16, 1942, the L-8, a U.S. Navy blimp, prepared to take off from Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. It's mission? To hunt for Japanese submarines sinking merchant ships off the coast of California. Two men are on board that day: Lt. Cody, the pilot, and Ensign Adams, the co-pilot. Five hours later, the L-8 makes an unscheduled landing just south of San Francisco. After the authorities watch the blimp slowly descend, they approach it carefully only to discover there's no one board.
